Andy Warhol "Other Voices Other Rooms"

Although a poster I saw last week proclaimed " Warhol is over if you want to" but it's amazing how relevant he still is 21 years after his death. Especially with Streetart crossing over to the art mainstream, YouTube 15min celebrities and labels like BAPE and Maharishi unabashingly celebrating the man the Warhol legacy has a firm place in each Hypebeasts life.

So just got around yesterday to catch the latest Warhol exhibition at the Hayward gallery and it's great! It gets a lot of mediocre reviews but I really enjoyed it.

Apart from the obvious screenprints the the very well designed exhibition space showcases a wide selection of his films and offer the possibility to watch all 42 episodes of Warhol TV he did for a small cable channel. The 15min long shows are basically portraits of him and his celeb mates and hilarious to watch. Also on display is a "time capsule", basically a box full of stuff he collected in a certain period of time. Reminds me of my boxes full of pop crap, flyers, mags and stickers that spam my bedroom... so there you go. It's not crap, theses are "time capsules". ok?!

Anyway, viva la Pop! Looks like Warhol ain't over just yet...

Paintings, works on paper and installation | Show: 12.11.2008 - 13.12.2008

Alëxone "Gros comme une Maison" / Paintings and works on paper

French born Graffiti artist Alëxone has been working since the early 90’s in Paris. In 1995, he starts to develop his calligraphic work on walls all around Europe under the name of “Oedipe”. In the year 2000, he starts to introduce characters in his work and becomes Alëxone.

For his first show in Geneva, Alëxone brings along with him very colored and calligraphic paintings and a new series of large drawings. His works are made with great care and requires a long and meticulous preparation. Using natural and homemade pigments, glaze, resin, spraypaint, fluorescent ink, pasted papers. The show "Gros comme une Maison” will lead us into the artists surrealist universe.

Check out the gallery speerstra.net to find out how to get there...

Is Laptop the new Hard Rock?

Checked out Drums of Death yesterday. Big makeup and big gestures! It's quite funny how artists trying to breathe energy into laptop sets lately. While old skool knob twiddlers like Luke Vibert stare at their screens without barely moving, new artists like Flying Lotus, Daedalus and Drums of Death jump, spit, tweak and jump. Especially DoD exceeds at in the Rock Show department. I just wonder how he gets all that sweat and makeup from his MacBook screen...

Aaron Rose

It's crazy how many big guns of the Street Art scene pay London a visit recently. This time it's Aaron Rose who hits the UK for the screening of the Beautiful Losers movie. The ICA will host a Masterclass event with him talking about various aspects of the mechanics of Street Art. Pretty hyped for this one!

BAPE book hype heating up!

I like what I see so far... ahhh... this book will show the Haterz why BAPE was the hottest shit on the block! I say "was" as the recent exposure killed the secret underground appeal BAPE used to have for many headz, which is a shame. Personally I can't wait for the book to drop...

Still London BAPE soldiers can look forward to a London Edition of the book in the special red and blue UK Camo and maybe even an appearance by the Nigmeister himself. Let's keep those paws crossed!

Guess who's back in the art game...

Photobucket

Came across a new work by Goldie at the last Graffle exhibiton in London a couple of months ago but wasn't sure if it was really THAT Goldie. Now it's pretty much clear that Mr.Metalheadz is back in the art game. It all looks very much like Photoshop filters to me... but then again: Hot chicks, spray paint splats and Pop Art optics... once again I am in... i know it's sad.

Goldie is gearing up for a new Solo Show 2009 so let's see if he can establish himself in the era of the big Streetart ca$h-in.

Check out more of his work at eddielock.co.uk/goldie

D*Face show at Black Rat Press

Photobucket

Sweet new show by D*Face. Possibly all sold out by now...

I must say I am sucker for crisp lines, comic book imagery and bold colors ( see KAWS ) so how could I not enjoy the show!

But if Streetart really belongs in galleries and is not more interesting pasted up on some grimy walls outside is a different question... but I reckon it's just fair enough to get some mullah out of what you do. Artists need to eat too apparently...

Geez...

Photobucket

Talking about how far things evolved in the game... or retarded. Depending on your viewpoint. I must say I am still a fan of Mr. Donnelly although he is rinsing his crossed out eyes formula to the chomping max ( see KAWS recent Walk the line exhibit in Miami ). But then again, with a shop in Tokyo, collabos with Marc Jacobs and collectors like Nigo and Pharrell... who is complaining? This metal KAWS head is taking the piss a little tho. Talking about getting big headed!

Photobucket

When his head appaered with the BxH collabo I though it was a nice fun touch. But this thing is blowing things out of proportion... LITERALLY. I wonder who will buy this... as I guess this piece is even too much for his regular collectors. But I might be wrong...

BAPEtastic...

Photobucket

Ahhh... we came a long way together. I can still remember when MoWax released the first UNKLE record and every Hypebeast tried to hunt down the impossibly rare BAPE gear James Lavelle was wearing. Now UNKLE is a rock band with sweating indie boys and girls in the moshpit and Nigo grew his BAPE empire together with Darth Pharrell to unknown heights of fashion Bling Bling.

While it certainly lost it's underground appeal, I still get excited about this new book. 15 years in the geek game needs to be celebrated! Can't wait to put on some old MoWax records and flip the pages of what looks like the ultimate BAPE bible...

So let's just hope Number Two will make the trek over to London as well so we can all get out our camo hoodies amd queue up one last time...

Stephen Chow ROCKS!

Photobucket

Just back from one of the few screenings of CJ7, the latest film by Stephen Chow. LOVED IT!

I know, CJ7 looks like a lame kids movie of Flubber proportions but I was still keen to see if the man behind the amazing movies Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle is able to save what looks like a sucky concept and turn it into a watchable flick. Although this movie apparently divides the Chow Fan camp in two, I must say I damn enjoyed myself tonight!

Chow just knows what's funny and what's not ( unlike a LOT of people working in Hollywood today ) and hits all the right notes and even when he is using tired and tested story devices and clichés, he still manages to add fresh and unforeseen twists.

Apparently Chows next movie will be an adaption of the TV show Green Hornet... let's just pray Hollywood will not screw this up regardlessly! Go Chow go!!!
